Many internally displaced people have the potential to successfully operate a small business but lack the investment capital and basic management skills to get started. Currently, Connect Africa works with local leaders and pastors to equip entrepreneurs with these skills. Leaders in the area of microfinance from the Kampala area, as well as from around the globe, take time to serve communities and teach business seminars in northern Uganda.
Connect Africa is responding to the need for capital by partnering with BANCS Microfinance, based in Kampala, Uganda. Their shared goal is to introduce fully equipped micro-banking programs to Ugandan IDP camps through the CARCs. These BANCS branches will create savings programs among camp residents, teach basic management skills, and reward capable residents with the skills and capital necessary to succeed.
Connect Africa’s microfinance initiative will require prospective business owners to attend a four day business seminar at a resource center, with sessions on basic bookkeeping and business skills. As prospective business owners develop a credit history, they will be able to attend advanced training seminars at CARC conferences and receive larger loans that can be used to start water filter shops, brick making factories, or other businesses. The skills residents learn will be invaluable as they gradually move out of IDP camps and resettle into areas that need new infrastructure.
